Mission

Ocean conservation through research, education, sustainability, & Access

The R/V Pilar is a versatile vessel and organization. Serving as a research platform, we offer scientists a platform for conducting experiments and studies of marine life. By collaborating with experts, we strive to contribute valuable insights that inform conservation efforts and enhance our understanding of marine ecosystems.

One of our key endeavors is running Tag-and-Release missions that contribute to tracking the populations of marlin and other Pelagic species. This valuable information aids managers in regulating fishing activities and safeguarding critical habitats like spawning and nursery areas.

Access for all angers while advocating for fishing sustainably & responsibly. We encourage all anglers to take only what you need and never more. We all love eating fish, but fishing to the limits isn’t sustainable or necessary.

Supporting fish markets that prioritize sustainable sourcing. When buying fish, it is essential to ask questions about where and how it was caught. By supporting fishing vessels that follow sustainable practices and avoiding commercially caught fish, we can positively impact marine conservation.

Plastic pollution remains a major threat to our oceans, and we actively promote alternatives to plastic while raising awareness about our collective impact. By educating others about the consequences of our actions on the oceans, we strive to foster a more harmonious relationship with these precious ecosystems, preserving their health and well-being for generations to come.

PRIMARY Efforts

Providing a Platform for science

Providing scientists with an advanced and environmentally-friendly platform, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, to carry out comprehensive studies and research on the overall well-being of our oceans.

Tag & Release Research

Running Tag-and-Release missions to help researchers better track the populations of key Pelagic species, giving them more data to better understand the behavior and migratory patterns of these important species.

Education

We would like to help teach the next generation and the general public to better understand and respect our oceans by freely providing all the information gathered on the R/V PILAR and beyond in the form of entertaining and educational content.

Access For All

We support all of the restrictions that the State has in place, but we don’t believe that all of California should become an MPA. We support the right to go fishing sustainably & we hope that our tagging research will help us better understand what the populations of our favorite fish actually are.
